When people think of Africa, they often think of incredible wildlife, the savannah, or dusty villages. But the reality is that Africa is the fastest-urbanizing continent in the world.
My family and I have been serving in Cape Town, South Africa, for 16 years. For the past 12 years, we have been involved in church planting across the country. We have a passion and burden to see healthy, life-giving churches planted throughout South Africa, specifically in Cape Town.
About five years ago, God began stirring our hearts with the vision to plant a church. During this time, Assemblies of God World Missions Africa launched a new initiative called Urban Tribes. As Africa rapidly urbanizes, we recognized the need for AGWM Africa missionaries to be strategically placed in growing city centers in order to effectively reach the influencers who are shaping today’s culture and impacting the future of the city.
With a population of 5.14 million, Cape Town is one of the most influential cities on the continent. It is affectionately known throughout Africa as the “Mother City.”
Cape Town is a multicultural city and has become a melting pot of the diverse ethnic groups that make up South Africa. We are seeing the emergence of a new tribe among these diverse people groups—communities that are no longer defined primarily by ethnolinguistic identity, but by shared values, interests, and experiences.
As a movement, we focus on the Seven Spheres of Cultural Influence: arts, religion, business, government, media, family, and education. Through these diverse people and spheres of influence, our heart is to bring spiritual transformation to Cape Town. We believe the hope for this community is the Church.
By God’s grace, we have been able to plant a life-giving, high-impact church within this great city that reflects the diversity of Cape Town. Our heart is not simply to be a church that exists in the city, but a church that exists for the city.
